A Study on Calcium and Chloride Levels in the Maternal and Fetal Sera

Abstract
The calcium level in the sera of the parturients and the cord blood of 49 cases as well as 37 healthynon-pregnant women as control was determined by Clark-Collip method.
The chloride level in the sera of the parturients and cord blood of 50 cases as well as 38 healthy non-pregnant women as control was determined by Schales and Schales method.
The results- obtained are as follows:
1) The mean value of calcium in the cord blood was 11.84¡¾0.18 mg./100 ml. and in the parturients 11.04¡¾0.17 mg./100 ml.
The mean value of calcium of the cord blood was 0.80 mg./100 ml. higher than that lof the parturients which is statistically significant, (t=3.2, 0.01>p>0.001)
The mean value of calcium of non-pregnant women was 11.38¡¾0.19 mg,./100 ml., 0.34 mg./100¢¥ ml. higher than that of the parturients. This difference is not significant statistically. (t =1.36, 0.3>P>0.2)
2) The mean value of chloride in the cord blood was 109.86¡¾1.60 mEq../L. and in the parturients 103.54¡¾1,18 mEq./L.
The mean value of chloride of the cord blood was 6.32 mEq./L. higher than that of the parturients. This difference is statistically significant. (t=3.19, O.OI p>O.001)
The mean value of chloride of non-pregnant women was 102.1¡¾1.20 mEq./L.
The difference in the mean value of the parturients is not significant statistically. (t=0.85, 0.5>p>0.4).
